Battling Winter Illness Naturally – Grandma Science Part5 – RENKON (Lotus Root)

As winter settles in, the familiar foes of cold and flu often bring along a scratchy throat and a stubborn cough with clinging phlegm. In such moments, the wisdom of grandmothers shines, and the remedy often recommended is none other than the humble lotus root (Japanese RENKON).

RENKON, the lotus root boasts remarkable efficacy in alleviating phlegm and cough. Personally, I recall experiencing notable relief the day after consuming a substantial amount of lotus root during bouts of persistent phlegm and coughing.

While the traditional remedy, lotus root soup (蓮根湯)blended with ginger, is widely known, I have a personal twist to share. Crushing lotus root, shaping it into balls, coating with tempra butter, frying, and indulging in this crunchy delight not only preserves the nutrients but also proves to be effective. Nevertheless, for maximum nutrient absorption, consuming lotus root in its raw or minimally processed form is likely the optimal choice.

Rich in vitamin C, tannins, potassium, fiber, and more, each component of lotus root contributes to combating throat inflammation. Yet, it’s the holistic composition of lotus root, rather than individual elements, that appears to create a synergistic effect, enhancing its overall healing properties.

The lotus, revered in Buddhism and Hinduism and serving as the national flower of India, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka, holds a mystical reputation. Legend has it that it bloomed from the footprint of Buddha as he walked on water. The unique growth conditions of lotus root, submerged in water without sunlight exposure, with enlarging stems creating distinctive perforations, impart an aura that sets it apart from ordinary vegetables, hinting at a mysterious power.

Conclusion:

While today’s exploration may not provide a scientific verdict, I encourage you to embrace the healing potential of lotus root the next time winter’s cold and troublesome phlegm strike. In sharing some of my grandmother’s winter wisdom, remember the profound phrase “医食同源” (ishoku-dōgen), emphasizing the interconnectedness of medicine and food.

In the spirit of well-being, I wish you good health for the remainder of this winter.
