If so, toxins accumulating in your body could be one of the root causes.
A few decades ago, detoxing was mostly about avoiding car exhaust and factory smoke. But today, toxins are everywhere—hidden in the foods we eat (like vegetables, fruits, meat, dairy, and fish), tap water, household cleaning products, cosmetics, and even prescription medications. And if we consider environmental radiation (such as what was released during the Fukushima nuclear meltdown), and EMF from wifi and cellphones like 5G, the amount of toxicity we’re exposed to daily is staggering. Many medical experts and research institutions now believe this toxic overload contributes significantly to modern health epidemics like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and Alzheimer’s.
The reality is that our daily toxin exposure far exceeds what our natural detox systems—like the gut, liver, and kidneys—can handle. As a result, these organs are overburdened, which leads to inflammation and dysfunction. This makes detoxification not just helpful, but essential for long-term health.
That said, quick fixes like “5-day” or “7-day” detox programs you often see marketed to busy people don’t offer lasting results. Why? Because your detox organs are interconnected—supporting one without addressing the others can backfire. For example, if you try to detox your liver but your digestive system isn’t functioning well, the toxins released from the liver won’t be properly eliminated. Instead of improving your health, this can actually make things worse by reintroducing toxins into the body.

For the past five years, I’ve been practicing a highly effective detox protocol based on an 8-week system developed by Dr. Joseph Pizzorno, one of the founders of Bastyr University, a pioneer in the field of naturopathic medicine. I’ve adapted his protocol to suit the Japanese lifestyle and diet, but the core principles apply universally.
This detox program is divided into four two-week phases:
- Phase 1 – Preparation: Get the body ready for detox.
- Phase 2 – Gut Reset: Balance gut bacteria and restore digestive health.
- Phase 3 – Liver Cleanse: Detoxify and rejuvenate the liver.
- Phase 4 – Kidney Support: Cleanse and tune up the kidneys for full-body detox.

The detox is food-based, meaning you’ll be eating (not fasting!) while supporting your organs with natural detoxifying foods and targeted supplements. There are some dietary adjustments, but no extreme restrictions. It’s a gentle yet powerful approach that aligns with how your body naturally wants to heal.
In the next blog post, I’ll introduce the most accessible and revitalizing part of the program: the Gut Detox Phase. This phase can be done on its own anytime, and it’s often where people notice the biggest transformation. Don’t miss it!
