A Love Song for Those with Sensitive Stomachs – Part 4 – Digestion and Energy

Improving energy here enhances digestion.

Today, let’s delve into digestion from an energetic perspective.

Are you acquainted with the “solar plexus”?

It earns this name due to the convergence of countless nerves, resembling the rays of sunlight.

This area, situated around the solar plexus but specifically referring to the epigastric region, is where various nerves of the autonomic nervous system converge, linking to organs like the stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, gallbladder, and small intestine. It acts as a neural nexus, facilitating communication between the brain and these digestive organs.

The function of the solar plexus, specifically “signal transmission between the brain and the digestive organs,” is pivotal for human survival, health, and digestive efficiency, playing a critical role.

Indeed, signals from the solar plexus regulate activities such as peristalsis (the involuntary movement of food and other contents within the gastrointestinal tract), significantly impacting digestion. Hence, dysfunction of the solar plexus is implicated in conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, heartburn, and various other digestive ailments.

From an energetic viewpoint, this region holds significant importance. In Ayurveda, it corresponds to the third chakra. In Taoism, governs the energy of “earth” (digestion). Thus, nurturing the energy of the solar plexus can help manage and fortify digestive function.

While numerous yoga poses focus on the third chakra, here, I’ll introduce Taoist qigong, a practice I often engage in.

This video showcases a qigong exercise instructed by Damo Mitchell, the founder of Lotus NeiGong and Internal Arts Academy, from whom I’ve learned Tai Chi. It aims to enhance the energy associated with the “earth” (spleen and stomach) in traditional Chinese medicine, thereby regulating digestive system function and its energy flow.
